Welcome to this wonderful tutorial where you will learn how to make beautiful Mother’s Day Cards with Sizzix.. If you want to know what the Sizzix Big Shot is, Click here and learn all the basics about this spectacular DIY machine.

To make cards with this machine you must have very few elements: the machine, the cutting dies or embossing folders that you want to use, and paper. The other elements that you use will be of your choice and depend on the decoration that you want to make to your card: EVA foam, thread, ribbons, stones, glitter, paints, stamps, brooches, and more.

To start, I am going to list some of the necessary tools. I have the Sizzix Big Shot embossing and die-cutting machine, but any of the Sizzix references work basically the same. If you want to know what types of references exist and what their characteristics are, Click here and learn a little more about this wonderful line.

All Sizzix machines come with adapters, a multi-purpose platform, and cutting blades. These are used to generate a sandwich and pass the tools through the central slot of the machine, with the necessary pressure to generate the function you want.

The other tools you need are the embossing dies and folders, these should ideally be from the Sizzix brand, however, there are many other brands available on the market with an infinite number of designs, styles, and prices, most of these adapt very well to the Sizzix line machines and accessories, I recommend you read very well before buying any of them.

Step by Step to Make a Card with Sizzix

In this tutorial, I will show you the step-by-step of one of the cards, but I will also show you many other designs with their respective materials, accessories, and tips to inspire you to create beautiful Mother’s Day Cards with Sizzix!

Step 1: Choose the Materials and Accessories

*You can use the reference you have available, the accessories are included when you buy the machine.

**I suggest We R Memory Keepers cutting and scoring board, you can also use a guillotine or scissors.

***Make sure they match the colors of the designer paper

****Useful for making realistic-looking flowers and manipulating project elements.

Step 2: Using the Cutting Board

All cards require a cover. To do this, you can use a cutting board, a guillotine, or scissors, the latter is the least recommended but ultimately useful if you do not have any of the other elements.

I love the We R Memory Keepers Cutting and Scoring Board, as it has a ruler that allows for very precise cuts, it also allows you to generate fold lines, and it is compact and comfortable to handle.

First, you must be clear about the design and size of your card to decide what type of cover you are going to cut. The cover is the body of the card, there are covers that open on one side, below, in the central or lateral region of the cover.

To make the cover of my card I used shiny salmon-colored pearlescent cardstock, leaving the opening in the central region of the cover

Then I cut out the other solid elements of the card:

– A shiny mint green pearlescent cardstock sheet that will be part of the cover. I cut it into two equal parts so that it is compatible with the card cover.

– A second sheet of the same size on designer paper that will go inside the card.

– Two strips that I will use as a belt so that the card does not open, one made with salmon-colored cardstock and the other with designer paper.

Step 3: Using the Dies

The first die I used is the Sizzix Framelits: Circles code 657551. I generated a circular cut in the upper central region of the cover and the mint green foil that will be part of the cover.

Then I used the Sizzix Thinlits dies:

-Small Stranded Flowers, code 661806.

-Alphanumeric letters, code 662228.

-Words of celebration, code 660223.

I placed them on the white cardstock to obtain flowers in different sizes, the word “Mom” and the phrase “thank you”. I also cut some leaves out of the mint green card stock to add detail to my cover.

Step 4: Using the Embossing Folder

In this step, I used the folder Textured Impressions A6 3D Sheets code 661260. I inserted into it the sheet that I had previously cut out of mint green cardstock for the cover.

Tip: If you need to use a die and an embossing folder on any of the design elements, as in this case, I recommend doing the embossing after using the die. Since if you run the material with the embossing through the machine it will be damaged. In short, first, die cut and then emboss.

Step 5: Use High Quality Glue

First I used double-sided tape to stick the mint green foil, with the embossed leaves, to the front of the front cover, and the designer paper to the inside of the card.

For the assembly of the card, I started with the cover. This is undoubtedly the most important piece of the card since it is the first element with which our recipient has visual contact.

The goal is to awaken beautiful emotions and feelings, so it must be striking and in keeping with the occasion and the person who will receive it.

Tip: I suggest using high-quality glue for a more durable result.

I used double-sided adhesive tape to glue the elements that make up the belt that will keep the card closed: the salmon-colored cardstock strip and the designer paper strip.

I also added a jute cord bow to the belt of the card with a small bow in the central part.

Then I used liquid glue to stick the flowers and the phrase “thank you” on the cover. The word “Mom” I glued to the inside of the card.

Step 6: Using the Pearls

Using high-quality liquid glue, I added some pearls to the central part of the flowers, this detail makes them look more delicate.

It’s beautiful, my mother will be happy to receive this card on her special day!

Now, I am going to share with you other card designs for Mother’s Day, with their respective materials and tips to inspire you to create your own.

  • I cut some circular frames out of gold metallic cardstock to highlight some of the images.
  • To achieve the overlapping of the circles I used thick double-sided tape behind some of them, this generates a more aesthetic and 3D result, if you don’t have that tape you can use EVA foam.

Finally, I added some self-adhesive gold and black rhinestone stickers to highlight some elements.

The result is spectacular!

Errors while writing my article... Don't let it happen to you!

When I made one of the star cards, I used the decorative masking tape on a polka dot embossed sheet, the tape didn’t stick properly, it was uneven in some places and it doesn’t look good aesthetically… So I recommend you avoid the use of this tape, specifically, on embossed sheets to avoid this effect.
